Are you good at keeping secrets? You are? Not me! I’m terrible at keeping secrets, I’m ashamed to say. I keep them, but it’s not easy. I’m a very happy-go-lucky, fun-loving, easy-going talker. If I’m not careful I tell the secret before I know it. So I really have to exercise self-control to keep a confidence.
In the book of Matthew, which is one of the Gospels in the New Testament, Jesus is recorded as saying that there are 3 things, which when done in secret will bring you great rewards. Great rewards from the maker of the universe….whaaaat? Now, that gets my attention. The one who made the night sky, the Rockies, my beautiful children is promising to reward me for keeping a secret. Giving in secret, praying in secret, fasting in secret…3 actions, when done in secret, get rewarded by the Most High. GIVE… Matt.6:4 “so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.” Pray…Matt. 6:6 “But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.” Fast…Matt.6:18″so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”
If you read the verses in context you’ll find that Jesus is talking about doing the right things for the wrong reasons. The Pharisees gave, prayed, and fasted and wanted everyone to know what they were doing, so they could be well thought of. But the Lord says to keep those things just between the two of you. An act of intimacy between you and God. Like a whisper in your husband’s ear when no one is looking…..a tender act of love. Yes, I’m going to be better at keeping secrets, in fact I want many of these kind of secrets to keep. GIVE-PRAY-FAST and be rewarded by our most high….shhhhh
